KS4 Curriculum Guide - Year 10 Business Studies
Term 1Enterprise and Entrepreneurship   
Students are introduced to the dynamic nature of business in relation to how and why business ideas come about. They also explore the impact of risk and reward on business activity and the role of entrepreneurship.
Assessment: Examination questions based on the topic covered. Each question takes approximately 20 minutes.Key Words and Terms
 
Term 2Spotting a Business Opportunity   
Students will explore how new and small businesses identify opportunities through understanding customer needs and conducting market research. They will also focus on understanding the competition.
Assessment: Students will sit an EOU Assessment based on exam questions. The areas assessed will be: - Customer needs - Market Research - Market Segmentation - The competitive environmentKey Words and Terms
 
Term 3Putting a Business Idea into Practice    
This topic focuses on making a business idea happen through identifying aims and objectives and concentrating on the financial aspects.
Assessment: Students will sit an EOU Assessment based on exam questions. The areas assessed will be: -Business aims and objectives -Business revenues, costs and profits -Cash and cash-flow -Sources of Business Finance Key Words and Terms
 
Term 4Making the Business Effective    
Students will explore a range of factors that impact on the success of the business, including location, the marketing mix and the business plan.
Assessment: Students will sit an EOU Assessment based on exam questions. The areas assessed will be: - The options for start-up and small businesses -Business Location -The marketing mix -Business Plans Key Words and Terms
 
Term 5Understanding External Influences on Business    
Students are introduced to arrange of factors, many of which are outside of the immediate control of the business, such as stakeholders, technology, legislation and the economy. Students will explore how businesses respond to these influences.
Assessment: Students will seat a mock on investigating small business, it will be 1 hour and 30 minutes long and it will be broken down into 3 sections totalling 90 marksKey Words and Terms
 
Term 6Growing the Business    
Students are introduced to methods of growth and how and why business aims and objectives change as businesses evolve. The impact of globalisation and the ethical and environmental questions facing businesses are explored.
Assessment: Students will sit an EOU Assessment based on exam questions. The areas assessed will be: -Stakeholders -Technology and business -Legislation and business - The economy and business -External influences as well as ethics and the environmentKey Words and Terms
