KS3 Curriculum Guide - Year 9 Art
Term 1 & 2Insects
Students will create work based on the theme of insects; this will be the vehicle for them to explore a wide range of materials and hone their skills. If they are taking GCSE art it is a taster, in the foundation skills they will need to be applying at the start of the first Year 10 unit of work. They will have the opportunity to use; oil pastels, chalk pastels, fine-liner, coloured pencil, and acrylic paints. They will also be given the opportunity to create work in the style of steampunk or surrealism. Assessment:

Term 3 & 4Identity - (Nancy Standlee / Grayson Perry)
Students will be asked to explore the theme of identity. They will do this by an exploration of the general theme, and then a personal investigation into their own identities. They will explore this theme both through the written word, in drawing and through creating a collaged self portrait inspired visually and by the working process of the artist Nancy Standlee. We will look at the artist Grayson Perry, in regards to the theme of ‘identity’, and explore how he has communicated identity through his work. Students will then be given freedom to research their own artist who deals with this theme, and create work in the same style.

Term 5 & 6Grafitti
We will briefly look at the history of Graffiti to put it into context. Students will explore ‘tag’ designs using a grid technique. They will then be asked to design a variety of their own ‘tags’ taking one of these and developing it further into an A4 completed design idea. The students will then look at some specific street art based designers, Mike Perry, and Merjin Hos, whose work is predominantly based around shape, colour and pattern. They will make a box net, and apply designs inspired by these artists work to it in a variety of media. Students will then be asked to create their own trainer design. They will research existing products, and brands. Their final outcome should take the best of all their research from the unit forward into a final outcome.
