KS3 Curriculum Guide - Year 7 Science
Term 1Matter & Organisms   
Matter - 1. Particle Model 2. Separating Mixtures Students will first look at the properties of solids, liquids and gases based on the arrangement and movement of their particles. They will then develop practical skills by using a range of techniques to separate mixtures. Organisms - 1. Movement 2. Cells Students will start off the term by learning how the human body moves and will also compare different types of cells; how they are adapted to do their job and how they work together to form bigger structures. Students will also learn how to use a microscope.
Assessment: Matter - 30 minute end of topic test covering: States of Matter, Separating Techniques. Waves - End of topic test covering: Properties of a Wave, Hearing Ranges, Structure of the Ear, Sound Waves, Reflection & Refraction, Properties of Light, Filters. Organisms - 30 minute end of topic test covering: Skeletal System, Animal Cells, Plant Cells, Specialised Cells.Key Words and Terms
Term 2Reactions & Earth   
Reactions - 1. Metals & Non-Metals 2. Acids & Alkalis Students will then be looking at the physical and chemical properties of metals and non-metals. Students will start developing their practical skills by testing various substances to identify whether they are acids or alkalis using different indicators. Earth - 1. Earth Structure 2. Universe Students will learn about the structure of the Earth by looking at the rock cycle and how different types of rocks were formed. This unit will then extend on to the structure of the Universe.
Assessment: Reactions - 30 minute end of topic test covering : Metals & Non Metals, Reactions with Oxygen & Acid, Reactivity Series, Displacement Reactions, Physical & Chemical Changes, Hazard Symbols, Acids & Alkalis, Indicators, Neutralisation. Earth - 30 minute end of topic test covering: Composition of the Earth, Rocks & the Rock Cycle, Weathering, The Solar System, The Moon, Seasons, Satellites.Key Words and Terms
Term 3Energy & Genes   
Energy - 1. Energy Costs 2. Energy Transfers In this unit students will compare different types of energy and how it is transferred. They will also compare the cost of electricity and evaluate the advantages and disadvantages of different energy resources. Genes - 1. Variation 2. Human Reproduction This topic will help students to understand how characteristics are varied between species and how variation can help in different environmental conditions. Students will also look at the stages of the development of the foetus and the stages of the menstrual cycle.
Assessment: Energy - 30 minute end of topic test covering: Types of Energy, Cost of Electricity, Fossil Fuels, Renewable Energy Resources, Burning Fuels, Thermal Energy. Genes - 30 minute end of topic test covering: Vertebrates & Invertebrates, Adaptations, Variation, Reproduction, Reproductive System, Pregnancy, Menstrual Cycle, Birth.Key Words and Terms
Term 4Forces & Waves   
Forces - 1. Speed 2. Gravity This unit will see students interpret data using distance-time graphs to explain how the speed of an object changes. Students will also learn how to draw force diagrams and compare how gravity varies for different masses and distances. Waves - 1. Sound 2. Light This unit introduces students to the properties of sound and light. They will learn how sound is made and transferred and will also learn how to draw ray diagrams to illustrate how light behaves in different circumstances.
Assessment: Forces - 30 minute end of topic test covering: Speed, Distance-Time Graphs, Speed-Time Graphs, Terminal Velocity, Acceleration, Weight & Gravity. Waves - 30 minute end of topic test covering: Properties and Behaviour of Sound and Light, The Ear, Hearing Ranges, Filters.Key Words and Terms
Term 5Electromagnets & Ecosystems   
Electromagnets - 1. Voltage & Resistance 2. Current Students will learn how to draw circuit diagrams and use the idea of energy to explain how voltage and resistance affect the way components work. They will also look at how current behaves in series and parallel circuits. Ecosystems - 1. Interdependence 2. Plant Reproduction This topic will heighten students’ awareness of the ecosystem by looking at different species and how environmental changes affect species’ population. Students will also learn about the structure of plants and how plants reproduce.
Assessment: Electromagnets - 30 minute end of topic test covering: Circuit Diagrams, Series & Parallel Circuits, Current, Voltage, Resistance, Magnetism, Electromagnets. Ecosystems - 30 minute end of topic test covering: Food Chains, Food Webs, Populations, Plant Groups, Reproduction in Plants, Seed Dispersal & Germination.Key Words and Terms
Term 6Revision/Exam/Scientific Skills & Science Project   
Revision of all units learned this year in preparation for an end of year exam. Project - This will also look at key analytical techniques required during a forensic investigation.
